Rhinoplasty - This is how it's done:

Before an aesthetic nose operation, the surgeon checks whether the patient's nasal mucosa is in order and whether nasal breathing is working properly. Since allergies often affect the nasal mucosa, an allergy test is recommended. A smell and taste test as well as X-rays of the nose are also useful. Photographs document what the nose looked like before the operation.

The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes about 1 hour. The incisions required for the operation can often be made in the mucous membrane of the nasal vestibules, so that they cannot be seen later from the outside. Depending on the procedure, however, small incisions, for example on the side of the nose, may be necessary.

Through the cuts in the mucous membrane, the doctor inserts special surgical instruments with which he dissects the soft tissues of the nose and thus gains access to the nasal skeleton. For example, the bony and cartilaginous parts of a nasal hump can be removed, an unsightly tip of the nose can be corrected or a saddle nose can be filled with bone or cartilage. If necessary, the surgeon will also correct the nasal septum or reduce the size of the nostrils. If the patient suffers from a long, hump nose, the doctor detaches the nasal bones from their base, as this is the only way he can optimally narrow the nose and form a delicate nasal bridge.

It is understandable that a surgically completely reshaped nose has to be treated like a raw egg for some time after the procedure!

After the incisions are sutured, packings are placed in the nostrils. The surgeon then sticks special plasters onto the bridge of the nose like a roof tile. The plaster bandage helps prevent swelling and bruising. A nasal plaster is placed over the plaster bandage and then a plastic pad so that the new nose is well protected.

In the first two weeks after the operation, nasal breathing may be restricted because the mucous membrane is still swollen and secreting wound secretions. Nosebleeds are also possible. Sensitivity on the tip of the nose and upper lip, but also on the nasal mucosa, may be temporarily reduced. This sensory disorder usually goes away on its own.
